Working with Holmfirth based conservation charity, River Holme Connections and artists Ben Simpson and Alistair Macdonald, James from Napoleon IVth is managing a community project which brings together three strains of art; sound art, visual art and video art. The intention is to increase local engagement and awareness of the river.
We have devised a series of workshops in schools and community groups throughout the Holme Valley, along the river Holme. We are charting the progress of the river, the seasons and the landscape from source all the way into the city of Huddersfield; culminating with a series of physical and digital exhibitions throughout the local area and online.
We are conducting two workshops with each of eight schools and community groups throughout the Holme Valley. These are taking place on Wednesdays between March and the end of Term in July. During the first workshop, we investigate and learn about the river and landscape, guided by a representative from River Holme Connections. We record sounds, collect images and film and learn about the plants (native and invasive), the uses of the river and its history. Then in the second workshop we use all the sound, images and film collected to start building our installation.
Each school and group involved receive a personalised film, will be fully credited and will obviously be invited to attend the final exhibitions during the summer. These exhibitions will take place over four weeks in four separate venues along the Holme river.
